Lockerbie Spokesman: Al-Meghrahi Was "The 271st Victim Of Lockerbie"

Reported by Huffington Post on Sunday, 20 May 2012 (on May 20, 2012)
Huffington Post
LONDON -- A spokesman for some of the British families of those killed in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing says he regrets the death of the only person to have been convicted in the case.

David Ben-Ayreah said Sunday he had always believed Abdel Baset al-Megrahi – whose death was confirmed by his son, Khaled al-Megrahi, in a telephone interview Sunday – is innocent.

To the end, al-Megrahi insisted he had nothing to do with the bombing.

The Libyan was jailed in 2001 for the bombing of the PanAm flight over Scotland that killed 270 people, but released and returned home in 2009 on humanitarian grounds as he was suffering from prostate cancer.

Ben-Ayreah said Sunday that his death "is to be deeply regretted" and believes al-Megrahi is "the 271st victim of Lockerbie. "
