The Queen will also go ahead with a planned visit to the East Midlands on Wednesday without her consort, Buckingham Palace confirmed.

Prince Philip left King Edward VII hospital in London on Saturday, a day before his 91st birthday.

He was admitted to hospital on Monday, a day after taking part in the Diamond Jubilee River Pageant that saw him take his place alongside the Queen on the Spirit of Chartwell barge in a flotilla of 1,000 boats along the Thames in extremely wet and cold conditions.

That meant he missed the Diamond Jubilee Concert on the Mall that evening and a national service of thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral, a carriage procession and flypast of World War 2 aircraft above Buckingham Palace the following day.

Today a 41-gun royal salute was fired by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery in London's Hyde Park to mark the duke's 91st birthday.
