Up to 300 strikes were reported between Bedfordshire and Kent, which could total more than 1,000 by Thursday as they become more widespread in the south.

‘There’s more lightning and hail to come and areas will see very heavy rainfall, with 20mm to 30mm in an hour and the potential for localised flooding and hazardous driving conditions,’ said Netweather spokesman Ian Michaelwhite.

‘It’s time to ditch the shorts, pick up a brolly and dig out a coat – with a giant fall in temperatures for many.’

A ten-hour severe weather warning was issued for London and the south-east Tuesday evening as the Met Office warned of ‘torrential downpours and the risk of localised flash flooding’.

It came after roads flooded in Rainham, Essex, as the first deluges hit on Monday.

Temperatures plummeted in the north Tuesday, with parts of north-east Scotland peaking at 9C (48F), compared with Friday’s 29.3C (84.7F) high.

Higher ground in northern England was predicted to drop to -2C (28.4F) Thursday night with frost and car windscreen ice on Saturday as far as Derbyshire.

Most parts of the country should be dry in time for the four-day diamond jubilee weekend and temperatures could reach 20C (68F) or more in the south-east, the Met Office predicted.

The east, north-east coastal areas, and possibly the south-west, could experience more cloud and showers, it added.
