*The first 12 towns to be rejuvenated as 'Portas pilots' have been named, with Croydon and Stockport among the successful entries.*

Acting upon retail guru Mary Portas's assessment of UK high streets, the government has announced which of the 370 destinations that applied to be part of the scheme have been chosen to receive part of a £1.2 million regeneration fund and tailored support from shopping experts.

As well as Croydon and Stockport, Bedford, Margate, Nelson, Newbiggin by the Sea, Wolverhampton, Stockton on Tees, Dartford, Liskeard, Bedminster and Market Rasen were selected.

'The best local high streets offer more than simply shopping - they are the beating heart of their neighbourhoods: places to meet, work, relax and come together as a community,' explained local government minister Grant Shapps.

He also confirmed that a further 12 towns will be helped in a second wave of the scheme to be announced by the end of July, while the Greater London Authority is funding three more.

Portas said she has been 'deeply touched' by the creativity of the bids to become 'Portas pilots' and suggested the popularity of the scheme shows Britain is keen for its town centres and high streets to be revitalised.
