*Tim Larkin, a US self-defence expert, has been banned from coming to Britain to give seminars over fears that his lessons could promote vigilantism.*

The instructor was due to speak at the Martial Arts Show in Birmingham and visit areas affected by riots in London last year, however he was turned away at an airport in Las Vegas.

A statement from the Home Office confirmed that an exclusion order had been made on the Target Focus Training coach.

'The home secretary will seek to exclude an individual if she considers that his or her presence in the UK is not conducive to the public good,' it read.

However, Mr Larkin said that negative press coverage of his work was to blame, and he was hoping that the decision would be reconsidered.

Speaking to the BBC, he added: 'There are Members of Parliament I'm sure I can go to... I think it's a gross overreaction, especially with some of the people who are allowed to come in and out of the UK.

'There is nothing outrageous about it, there's nothing that I'm going around to incite violence or to incite vigilantism - that's a characterisation of the people who hear my opinions on self-defence.'

Mr Larkin has a collection of media for sale on his website, including the book How to Survive the Most Critical 5 Seconds of Your Life and DVDs such as Nuclear Weapons II.
