*Up to 40,000 people are expected to descend on London for the official opening ceremony of the Olympic Stadium on Saturday afternoon.*

The event comes a little over two months before the start of the Games on July 27th, and will feature appearances from a number of Olympians, as well as other famous celebrity faces.

Vernon Kay and Gabby Logan will host the show, which will see an appearance from Sir Steve Redgrave, as well as performances by Chipmunk, Jon Culshaw and former Spice Girl Mel C.

And the event will be topped by one lucky youngster being chosen to cut the tape and officially open the stadium, ready for the Games to take place.

Youngsters were asked to apply for the opportunity to take part, and at the ceremony, Paralympic gold medallist Danielle Brown will fire an arrow at a series of spinning targets, which will choose one of the 100 children who made the final round, who will then open the stadium.

Also taking place in the stadium this weekend is the final of the British University and Colleges Sports championships, and Sebastien Coe, chairman of the organising committee said that it would be great to see people using the stadium at last.

'Seeing athletes on the track for the first time will be a special moment for me personally,' Lord Coe said.

The official Olympics opening ceremony takes place on July 27th.
