Two ‘minor components’ of genetic material were found on a fastener and padlock that secured Mr Williams’ body inside, a coroner was told.

Det Ch Insp Jackie Sebire, the officer leading the investigation, said: ‘My thought or my opinion since I went into the scene is that a third party had been involved in the death or by putting the body in the bag.’

Mr Williams, a GCHQ codebreaker, was on secondment to MI6 when his naked body was discovered in a holdall dumped in the bath of a central London safehouse in 2010.

Footage taken by police of the 31-year-old’s Pimlico flat showed bulges in the red North Face bag that contained his body. But there was no damage that would indicate a struggle by Mr Williams – who was a keen cyclist, said DCI Sebire.

‘He was very muscular, he trained regularly,’ she told Westminster coroner’s court.

‘It is only my opinion but I would have expected some tearing to the netting. In my opinion he was very calm. His face was very calm. His hands were resting on his chest.’

The film also showed a red wig, lipstick and make-up – part of the £20,000 haul of designer women’s clothing and cosmetics discovered in ‘pristine’ condition at the flat.

But Mr Williams’ childhood sweetheart Sian Jones insisted he was not a transvestite and would ‘most definitely’ have told her if he was.

She claimed they were gifts, adding: ‘I think he would have confided in me.’ The hearing continues.
