The medical staff at the hospital where the 62-year-old has been treated for more than a week praised his determination in overcoming his condition.

The singer, who is being treated at the London Clinic, fell into a coma after  contracting pneumonia in his fight against colon and liver cancer.

‘It is testament to Robin’s extraordinary courage, iron will and deep reserves of physical strength that he has overcome quite incredible odds to get where he is,’ said Dr Andrew Thillainayagam, Gibb’s physician and gastroenterologist

‘Robin is fully conscious, lucid and able to speak. He is breathing on his own, with an oxygen mask. He is of course, exhausted, extremely weak and malnourished.’

The doctor added he hoped Gibb could soon be moved from intensive care and on to the centre’s ward.

‘His wife, Dwina, sons Robin-John and Spencer and daughter Melissa have been at his bedside every day, talking to him and playing his favourite music,’ he said.

‘They have been tireless. The road ahead for Robin remains uncertain but it is a privilege to look after such an extraordinary human being.’
Gibb’s twin, Maurice, died from intestine problems in 2003.
