Apple’s number one competitor has a hit on their hands in the UK as the Galaxy S3ext has become the fastest-selling pre-order phone of the year, according to Carphone Warehouseext, Europe’s largest purveyor of cell phones. The new Galaxy is so highly anticipated in the UK that Samsung will release the phone on May 29th, a full day earlier than anticipated.

According to The Inquirerext, UK carrier Vodafoneext is also delightfully surprised by the Galaxy S3’s performance, as a spokesperson has said, “With over a week to go until launch, it's already the most pre-ordered Android device we've brought into our smartphone line-up to date and our limited time offer of 2GB of mobile data and 100 free music tracks is being snapped up."

The unfortunately named Carphone Warehouse agrees, and has said they will stock more than 800 of their stores with the S3 come May 29th in order to handle the huge demand for the new Samsung flagship device.

"The first 24 hours alone saw thousands placing their pre-order at Carphone Warehouse," said Carphone Warehouse's chief commercial officer, Graham Stapleton, according to The Inquirerext.

"The Galaxy S3 is without a doubt the fastest selling pre-order of 2012 so far. We're gearing up for an exceptionally busy launch day at the end of the month as the handset lands on shelves at our stores across the UK."

Announced just two weeks ago, Samsung’s latest addition to their Galaxy S family is no slouch.

Packed inside the slim, pebble-like case is Samsung’s own 1.4 GHz Exynos 4 Quad processorext running Android 4.0, and displayed on a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED HD touchscreen.

Samsung also announced some new “S” features, including “Smart Stay,” which keeps the screen fully lit and unlocked as long as your eyeballs are on it, S-Beam, which transfers files between 2 devices quickly by touching them together, and S-Voice, the Siri look-and-act-alike which allows users to control their phone with their voice.

Launched in London, Samsung is proclaiming the Galaxy S3 as the Official phone of the 2012 London Summer Olympics, and plan to release “a limited edition showcase device enabled with Visa’s mobile payment application, Visa payWave, [which] will be available for Samsung and Visa sponsored athletes and trialists,” according to The Telegraphext.

Samsung’s Galaxy S line has been a strong seller for Samsung and the Android crowd. As Samsung is currently the number one Smartphone manufacturer in the world, the Galaxy S phones are the closest thing to an iPhone Samsung has yet to release, in terms of widely recognized flagship devices.

Samsung is currently in a legal battle with Apple over patent infringement and IP disputes. Apple claims Samsung “slavishly copies” their designs and their devices look too much like iDevices. As CNET points outext the new Galaxy S3 has largely moved away from any Apple design, with the notable exception of S-Voice, and wonder if these design changes come as a result of the lawsuits.

For those American Android users excited to get their hands on their own Galaxy S3, Samsung is expected to release the device this summer, although you can currently pre-order the device from Amazon.com for $800ext.
