Samsung Ships More Phones Than Apple Sells

Reported by redOrbit on Wednesday, 2 May 2012 (on May 2, 2012)

*Michael Harper for RedOrbit.com* The “smartphone wars” have not been kind. In the very beginning, BlackBerryext, Palm and Nokiaext dominated the landscape. This was, of course, before the iPhone and Android entered the fray. The iPhoneext started out strong, and Androidext allowed other manufacturers such as HTCext and Samsungext to gain dominance in the market. As it stands today, RIMext is taking its last dying breaths, Nokia is trying to recuperate in the Windows Phoneext tent, and Palm...well, poor Palm has gone on to be with the great smartphone maker in the sky. Now, as reported by two different outside sources, Samsung may have the upper hand in the battle, edging out Apple for smartphone dominance. According to the International Data Corporation (IDCext), Samsung has shipped 42.2 million smartphones all over the world in their first quarter. As far as IDC is concerned, these numbers have earned the Korean company a market share of 29.1%. You may recall, Apple’s earning callext last week, wherein they announced selling 35.1 million iPhones last quarter.  According to the IDC report, Apple now has 24.2% market share. To their credit, Samsung had an impressive quarter, shipping 30.7 million more phones than they did in the same quarter last year. Senior research analyst with IDC, Ramon Llamas, said in a statement Tuesday, “The race between Apple and Samsung remained tight during the quarter, even as both companies posted growth in key areas.” “Apple launched its popular iPhone 4S in additional key markets, most notably in China, and Samsung experienced continued success from its Galaxy Note smartphone/tablet and other Galaxy smartphones.” If this wasn’t enough to make Samsung beam with pride, a second report was released Tuesday which says the gap between Samsung and Apple is even wider than previously estimated. UK based Juniper Researchext said today Samsung was able to ship 46.9 million phones in the last quarter. According to Juniper’s numbers, Samsung’s market share sits at 33%. In the report, Daniel Ashdown writes, “While Apple and Samsung have taken it in turns to lead the smartphone market over the last four quarters, it seems as if Samsung may now have established a firm lead in this space, shipping 11.8 million more units than the Cupertino, California company in Q1.” The glaring difference between these numbers lies in simple semantics. Apple themselves released numbers on how many iPhones they actually “sold.” As for Samsung, analysts are measuring the number of phones “shipped,” meaning these devices could still be waiting in back rooms across the globe, rather than resting comfortably in the hands of satisfied customers. Neither Samsung nor these analysts are reporting the number of devices “sold.” It’s also worth noting Apple currently sells 3 versions of their iPhone to different carriers worldwide. Samsung, however, sells at least 40 different Android smartphones to different carriers worldwide, not to mention their recent foray into Windows Phone. Without the number of Samsung phones actually “sold” rather than “shipped,” we won’t know for sure if Apple or Samsung is dominating the “smartphone wars.” Samsung is expected to announceext their newest flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S III on May 3 in London. Samsung has already said the new device will ship with a next-generation quad-core processor which is expected to bullish on power while using 20% less power than previous chips. Apple is expected to release a new iPhone this fall and announce details of their new operating system, iOS 6, this summer at WWDCext.
