Welcome to London 2012: Jessica Ennis's face will be the first sight to greet visitors (Picture: High Level Photography Ltd)

Heptathlete Ennis is one of Great Britain's strongest medal hopes at the London Olympics, and before they have even touched down, her fellow athletes will be aware of her presence because of his picture painted under the Heathrow flight path.

The image, on Thornbury playing fields, measures 53x75 metres and took painters two days and over 600 litres of - waterproof - paint to complete.

The picture will be visible long before visitors touch down (Picture: High Level Photography)

The picture is bigger than 15 tennis courts and 193 London buses and was created by British Airways, the official travel partner of London 2012.

'I’m thrilled to be the first face that people will see arriving into the UK for the London 2012 Games,' said Ennis.

'I hope it brings excitement to homecoming Brits, and reminds international athletes that we’re ready and prepared!

'We have the most dedicated fans in the world, who will get behind us every step of the way to give us a home advantage.'

The picture also features the hashtag HomeAdvantage, to generate fan fervour in the build-up to the London Games, which are now just six weeks away.

British Airways are also hosting the Park Live big screen viewing areas in the Olympic Park, where fans without venue tickets can watch the action live.
