The Spain striker produced his best performance since a £50million move from Liverpool in January 2011 during the rout of West London rivals QPR at Stamford Bridge.

The treble came five days after Torres scored in Chelsea’s sensational Champions League fightback at Barcelona and he said: ‘From my first day in English football, everything was really good and looking easy.

‘I was scoring almost every day and things were very good. I have had one very difficult year here, going through a very difficult period of time, where things were not right. When you work hard the rewards have to come, and it’s time to enjoy now.’

Torres has scored seven goals since Roberto di Matteo replaced Andre Villas-Boas as manager eight weeks ago. He managed just five for the club before that.

Asked what had changed, he said: ‘We understood that we needed to play as a team. I think that’s what we are showing now.’

John Terry shrugged off crowd abuse over his upcoming trial for allegedly racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand to score the second, with Daniel Sturridge and Florent Malouda also on target. Djibril Cisse got a consolation for the visitors.
