With a brand-new section just launched at http://www.ukmodelagencies.co.ukext, the leading model agency directory site offers an insight into how to become a model. 'How to get into the modelling industry is the question we get asked 100 times a day,' says Jim Dawson, Chief Press Officer at UK Model Agencies. Learn about the tips and tricks every model needs up their sleeves. 'It's all about what you know and not necessarily who you know!'

Learn the tips and tricks of the modelling industry with UK Model Agencies who say lessons are key in making a successful career in modelling.

http://www.ukmodelagenciesext is the largest online model agentext directory in the UK. At the click of a mouse they have thousands of model agents waiting for any aspiring model to peruse at their leisure. They say lessons need to be learnt from the offset but once educated; a model's looks and style can then take over.

'It's all about knowing how to promote yourself as a model in this very tough economic climate,' says Jim. 'Modelling has always been a very competitive industry and even more so these days as jobs are hard to come by. A lot of school leavers are trying out modelling as a way of breaking away from unemployment. It's not just about looks though,' he warns. 'A model has to have a smart business head as well as looking great.'

The team the UK Model Agencies receive thousands of emails each week from aspiring models, all wanting to know how to get into the modelling industry. With very few model agencies taking on new models at the moment due to the recession, trying to break into the industry is harder than ever but a model needs the right tools and knowledge to promote themselves.

'We would always advise gaining a modelling portfolio as the first step,' advises Stevie Lake, marketing manager for UKMA. 'But there are also other things that can be done. A Z card is like a business card for a model and we have a section on our website dedicated to different types of cards available on the market. This is quite an inexpensive way of showing off a few poses, but it also lists a model's vital statistics which is very important for any model agent to know.' He goes on to explain that the Z card works alongside the portfolio and in addition, if a model can afford to get a website made at the same time, then the three promotional tools are set in place.

'Becoming a model is being effectively self-employed and anyone starting out in a new business needs to buy tools and equipment to set themselves up. Modelling is no different and a modelling portfolio, a Z card and a website are three things which are essential for a model to obtain as soon as possible.'

Stevie also advises other ways of self promotion, such as posting videos online portraying model poses or past work, which can be uploaded to YouTube very easily. Websites such as Flickr can also be an inexpensive way of self promotion. 'Always be sure to copyright your images and make sure they cannot be stolen,' says Jim. 'Websites such as Flickr are fantastic for model to show extra images for free which aren't included in a portfolio, but a model needs to have a little bit of technical knowledge to stop anyone else stealing images and using them without permission.'

The team at UKMA also advise using social networking as another way of spreading the word and it seems there are certainly lots more little nuggets of advice available online at http://www.ukmodelagencies.co.ukext.
