With the 2012 London Olympics less than 100 days away, WF Denny ask the question, can the organisers really justify the claim that the games will be “the greenest ever?”
Cheshire,UK (PRWEB UK) 31 May 2012
John Haken from WF Denny questions the hype around announcements by the British Olympic Organisers that the games in London will be the Greenest ever. Mr Haken says “Let us look at one feature of the games that is confused and looking like green wash. We could examine the question of the mountains of waste that will be produced during the games.”
“Firstly plastic packaging waste, Why were the plastic recycling company “Closed Loop London” with there depot only six miles away from the main Olympic Stadium, not used as a recycler of choice by the Olympic Commissioning staff?”
Haken admits its good for the Olympic Committee, and good PR for Coca-Cola that the drinks firm is collecting P.E.T drink bottles for recycling. But at the same time raises the question of all the other plastics in use at the games?
“A good case can be made for allowing only P.E.T and R.PET bottles and containers at all the Olympic Venues. If this had happened, all the plastic waste could have been taken for recycling to the closest possible recycling plant.”
The advice from staff within the Olympic Committee on the use of the other plastics at the Olympic games is vague, and will lead to either the contamination of plastic recycling streams or more likely dumping in landfills.
In the case of Biodegradable food packaging , an easy case can be made for Bagasse and PLA lined paper cups. These containers can be composted with food waste in commercial composting facilities. There seems little use for PLA clear plastic containers in this scenario, but wooden cutlery and palm leaf trays would have been ideal.
Haken goes on to comment “I wonder how closely the London Boroughs will examine the actual waste stream from the Olympic Game’s.”
